Studying iconostasis, the ‘wall of paintings’ one finds in the orthodox churches.

I have seen many examples of this and it got me wondering, how this is arranged? Mostly i hesitate to take a picture, as it is too holy. Here is an example from some time ago, in Apatin, Serbia (thank you Dragan!):
